Oregonians fight for self-determination

7 December 2024

Leaders of the Greater Idaho movement have released a letter petitioning President Donald Trump to support the secession of 13 counties in Eastern Oregon from the state. These counties have all approved ballot measures to join the state of Idaho, which the movement says is culturally and politically more aligned with the people of eastern Oregon, who are experiencing growing dissatisfaction with the West Coast liberalism of the heavily-populated regions around the city of Portland. If both states and Congress were to approve the measure, the border could be moved by means of an interstate compact.

In February 2023, the House State Affairs committee of the Idaho House of Representatives also approved a resolution to enter into formal discussions with Oregon authorities to move the state’s border so as to allow eastern Oregonians to become part of Idaho.

The Pactum Institute supports the Oregonian people’s right to self-determination, and we hope that Trump will pay heed to their plight for peaceful secession. If they were to succeed, it would help to further revitalize nationalist secession movements around the world.
